BeReal has quickly become one of Australia’s most popular social media apps, despite being relatively new to the market, according to new data from Sensor Tower and its digital ad spend tracking platform Pathmatics.
The data revealed which social media apps are holding the top spots as the most downloaded in Australia.
Comparing app downloads of some of Australia’s most prominent social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and new player on the block, BeReal, the data has ranked the apps in order of consumer preference:
1. TikTok has held the position of the most downloaded social media app since 2019. It’s seen more than 2 million app downloads in the first three quarters of the year
2. Despite being relatively new to the market, BeReal has taken Australia by storm ranking as the second most popular social media app with 1,600,000 downloads in the first three quarters of the year
3. Facebook is in third space with 1,600,000 downloads in the first three quarters of the year
4. Instagram takes the fourth spot with 1,400,000 downloads during this time period, experiencing a decline in app downloads for three years in a row now
5. Snapchat ranks as the least popular with approximately 998,000 app installs across the first three quarters of the year.
Tom Cui, managing director APAC at Sensor Tower, said of the trends: “TikTok continues to be Australia’s favourite social media app. In fact, it’s now much more than just an entertainment app, rather, it is a livelihood for many Aussies, helping consumers to monetise their content and fuel the growing creator economy Down Under.
“BeReal has taken Australia by storm, surging in popularity since its appearance on the market late last year. It’s not easy to break into the social media market and perform so well. However, we’re yet to see if the app is set to be just a fad.
Cui said: “Global SensorTower data has shown that despite a flurry in downloads, BeReal’s daily usage is much lower than competitor apps which might suggest the novelty is wearing off.
“What’s really interesting is that Instagram app downloads are the second lowest of all the social media platforms. This suggests that the curated aesthetic is on the way out and authenticity is on the way in. Social media apps will do well to tap into this trend as consumers embrace originality over edited content,” he added.
