ACRAS

3AW’s Ross and John and KIIS’ Kylie and Jackie O win big at 2015 ACRAs

Commercial radio’s awards night moved to the Gold Coast this year with hosting duties given to actor and comedian Stephen Curry.

The Gold Coast Convention Centre was filled with over 1,000 people who started arriving around 5pm for the red carpet. The awards show got underway a little after 6pm with the program wrapping at 10pm and running just under four hours.

Sitting through the event takes some stamina – there are close to 90 awards given out in 33 categories with over 200 finalists from about 260 stations. Each one of those stations came with a cheer squad to celebrate any victory.

Most of the winners weren’t allowed a speech, but some of the presenters filled in dead air with a collection of videos including very funny shots of Amanda Keller showing off her stream with Brendan Jones, a parody clip from Fitzy and Wippa and a slide from Kyle and Jackie O which flashed on giant screens for a couple of minutes with the mobile phone numbers of the FM programmers – ARN’s Duncan Campbell, SCA’s Guy Dobson and Nova’s Paul Jackson.

No surprises that Southern Cross Austereo took home the most awards with 29 heading back to its stations all around Australia.

Nova Entertainment punched above its weight with 13.

The winners chart:
Southern Cross Austereo 29
Nova Entertainment 17
Grant Broadcasting 11
Australian Radio Network 8
Macquarie Radio 7
Capital Radio 5
ACE Radio 5

The longest speech of the night belonged to Hall of Fame inductee Jeremy Cordeaux (8 minutes 45 minutes) who was presented his trophy by the outgoing FIVEaa breakfast team – Pembo, Mark and Jane. (Jane retires later this year and Mark moves to weekends) with Pembo being joined by Will Goodingsfrom today. Cordeaux was presented with a video tribute that included Alan Jones, Peter Ford, Jane Reilly and Mark Aiston, Bob Francis, Neil O’Reilly, Rowey and Bicks, Sue Fraser Mapp and Cathy O’Connor.

With the awards over at 10pm, guests lingered in the awards hall before pealing off to network after-show events including Nova and ARN both taking over separate Broadbeach bars.
