Eight new docos funded by Screen Australia
August 9, 2011 Screen Australia has announced investment of $2.7 million in eight documentaries. The investment will trigger production worth almost $10 million.
Five international documentaries were announced including the SBS documentary The Network, produced, directed and written by Academy Award®–winning documentary filmmaker Eva Orner. The Network takes place behind the scenes at a new television network in one of the most dangerous places on earth.
Also announced is the ABC documentary The Australian Wine Revolution, written and directed by Stephen Oliver, about the recent history of the Australian wine industry. It is produced by Andrew Ogilvie and executive produced by Andrew Ogilvie and Phil Craig.
Screen Australia’s Chief Executive Ruth Harley said, “The latest funding round will produce a substantial slate of culturally significant and original documentaries for Australian and international audiences.”
From the National Documentary Program, Screen Australia has invested in First Footprints, a new landmark three-part ABC documentary series about the peopling of the Australian continent. The series is produced, directed and written by Martin Butler and Bentley Dean and is also written by Steve Kinnane.
Other international documentaries to receive investment are the ABC documentary Reptilian Battleground, produced, directed and written by Bianca Keeley, which will look at reptiles in Australia’s north and Network Seven’s Mutha Truckers (ep: Ed Punchard, Julia Redwood, w/d: Russell Vines) which follows long-haul road train drivers across Australia.
Dingo – Wild Dogs at War (p: Michael O’Neill, ep: Chris Hilton, d: Adam Geiger) is another international documentary for ABC Television which follows a charismatic farmer and canine advocate looking for solutions to the dilemmas surrounding dingoes.
SBS’s popular documentary series Who Do You Think You Are? (p/ep: Brian Beaton, Celia Tait, Margie Bryant) will return for a fifth season and the ABC documentary Family Confidential (ep: Laurie Critchley, w/d: Aviva Ziegler, Ili Baré, Sally Aitken) will explore the lives and homes of some of Australia’s most influential families. These two documentaries are funded through the General Documentary Program.
