2009 Ad Spend

Total advertising revenue for the twelve months January to December 2009 was $12,579,817,000. A decrease of 8.0% on 2008.
This followed a decrease of 8.5% for the six months January to June 2009 compared with the same period in 2008.
And a decrease of 7.6% for the six months July to December 2009 compared with 2008.
CEASA Chief Executive, Bernard Holt said that “It only confirms what we already knew, that 2009 was the blackest year for advertising revenue since I first compiled figures in 1960. It was confirmation too of the effects of the World Economic Crisis which, according to many commentators, still has a distance to go internationally.
Advertising revenue climbed steadily over the years from 1960, in spite of economic ups and downs until Paul Keating’s “recession we had to have” in 1990-91.From then on advertising revenue became unsteady moving up an down erratically.
The previous worst drop was in 2001 when advertising revenue went down by 6.0%
The only redeeming features for 2009 were an increase of 9.4% for online advertising revenue and +4.9% for Subscription Television advertising revenue.”

Newspapers went down by -15.7 %
Metropolitan/National Dailies by -18.6%
Metropolitan Sundays by -11.8%
Regional Dailies by -12.3%
Regional Non- Dailies by -5.4%
Suburban Newspapers by -18.8%
Magazines by -18.1%
Classified Directories by -4.9% (The Trading Post was not included)
Free to Air Television by -7.6%
Radio by -3.6%
Outdoor by -11.9%
Cinema by -8.0%
